Petr Chelčický: On Factions, on each faction separately, Chapter 31

But in here it is necessary to finish the talk about those mercies of God, where they can flop or be received from, from whom and to whom the Son of God gives them. And Saint Paul speaking about Him also announces, where His greatest mercies will be staying, and (Saint Paul) says, that the mercy of our God and Saviour came to light for all the people, and he (Saint Paul) teaches us to live in justice in this world by giving up all wrong-doings and all the desires of the body. The meaning lies in that why these matters are taught by the greatest mercy of God. For no other reason than that the mercy can not be received by those, nor can it have its place in those, nor can the mercy bring benefit to those, who will not learn this teaching from that mercy, and that (teaching) is, at first: while wanting to have this great mercy in yourselves for your own benefit, prepare for that mercy a place in yourselves by giving up things that are contradictory to that mercy, and those are: all the evil and desires of the body, with which mercy of God can not share space within one soul, because, either the evil of the sins or the mercy of God itself must be in it (in the soul). Because Scripture says: narrow is the bed, two can not stay on it; short is the robe, it can not cover both. That is why this commentary aims at the matter that the mercy of our God came to the world wanting to give itself to the people, but under circumstances that are feasible for it. And these circumstances lie in that so that the man who wants the mercy of God to have for his own benefit, must give up sinful love affairs of this world and own body, and that is because, the mercy of God can not be in one soul together with any sinful love affair of the world and the body, but she alone wants to have its place in the man. For that reason came the mercy of God to teach us this art. And if we learn this art from her, in order to give her the place by forcing out from the will all loves of the sins, the mercy will stay with us for all the good and benefits of the redemption. Let the man is in contempt of this mercy and her teaching, not wanting to vindicate another teaching for the reason of his own sinfulness, and turns to heaven seeking some kind of mercies from anybody - how he will clash with them? All heavenly citizens will shout at him, saying that the heavenly Lord came down to earth with all the mercies people need, and called every man for these mercies, (and the heavenly Lord) says: If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink full. Because he is the way of all mercies, the way of future retaliation and no man will enter the heavens but through Him, nor will (any man) find a mercy anywhere but in Him and through Him.

Notes:

1. Petr writes: "Because Scripture says: narrow is the bed, two can not stay on it; short is the robe, it can not cover both". He probably refers to Luke 17,34: „I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.” (King James Version of The Bible)
2. Petr writes "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink full." He obvously refers to John 7,37: “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” (King James Version of The Bible)
3. When using words „she/her“, a refer to the word „mercy“ as in Czech language the word „mercy“ is femininum
4. when Petr uses words „any one, anyone, any person, any human“, I usually translate it as „man/the man“ in order to achieve the same unity as in Czech text
